“How Can I Help”

Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and truly understand their struggles. And it is so incredibly important to move about the world with empathy.

A good way to do this is to ask people this magic phrase. “How can I help?” I discovered this phrase in treatment and have encouraged more people to use it.

When you see someone in your life – whether they have a disability or not – instead of assuming someone’s needs just ask how you can help. This gives the person struggling room to ask for space, a distraction, to rant, or whatever else they may need in that moment.

This allows me to become more in touch with my feelings and what I need at that moment and helps me communicate with those who care about me.

People love to feel helpful. So don’t be afraid to ask for what you need.
