Starting School

The summer is ending and that means school is starting. I wanted to share how I go about the start of school as a disabled individual and a service dog handler.

Once I get my schedule, I will reach out to my teachers letting them know I have a service dog and how I expect people to interact with her (aka not interact). I’ll ask the teacher to let the class know there is a service dog and to not distract her. I also want kids to be able to go to the teacher in case of allergies or fear of dogs so everyone is comfortable in their learning environment. I’ll explain what a service dog is, maybe a little bit about how she helps me, and how they can expect her to behave in the classroom (lay at my feet).

Last semester, Cassie did amazing in my school environment as well as in my art major, singer-songwriting, during rehearsals and performances. Transitioning to school is always scary for me, but I feel confident with Cassie by my side.

It will eventually be natural for students and teachers to ignore Cassie and let her work. But I have to remind myself to give people grace these first couple of weeks as some people may not know how to act around a service dog.

To be honest, I’m nervous because I know I will have to educate and adjust. But, I’m also excited for this year and all the opportunities I can do with Cassie.

If you are starting school with an SD, feel free to reach out and I can share some more tips and tricks. I know school can be intimidating even without a service dog.

Happy learning! :)
