Sensory Integration Disorder

When I was 4, I was diagnosed with sensory integration disorder (SID). I process sensory stimuli differently than others, which often leads to overstimulating. Most autistics struggle with SID but not everyone with SID has autism.

Because of this, I often use tools to help me. For example, noise-canceling headphones are my best friend. This takes out the lower frequencies that hit your middle ear and trigger your autonomic nervous system (fight, flight, or freeze response).

Another tool I use is fidgeting aids! This helps direct where the sensory stimuli are coming from and is a predictable stimulation for me. I also love to wear thick sweatshirts, this helps me avoid getting overstimulated when someone touches me or brushes up against me.

Feel free to check out the “Life Hacks” tab to find some of my favorite tools I use that help me cope with my sensory disorder!
