Running out of Spoons

There is a term in the disabled community uses that refer to their energy level: spoons. The basic concept is everyone starts the day with a certain amount of spoons and each task takes a certain amount of spoons away from you. But the disabled community is at a disadvantage. We don’t have as many spoons to start with AND each task takes more spoons away than the average person.

So when you hear someone say “I’m running low on spoons”, that means that they don’t have a lot of energy or their energy is used up.

I’m bringing this up because I’m running low on spoons. The spoons I do have are small and not working. From drivers ed (which is the most overstimulating thing EVER) to my ASL class, to treatment….. my spoons are GONE.

So this is just your reminder that you’re not alone. You are worthy even if you only do one “productive” task today.

And if you do have spoons, feel free to offer them to your disabled friends and family. We could use it :)
